Lori McKenna: Blessings Disguised

WHAT I SAY ABOUT HER
Oh I really like her. She has a raw, true quality to her voice that is hard to find now a days. Her lyrics are very heart felt and emotional. She paints a great picture with every word that she sings and every note that you hear.

WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT HER
Lori McKenna: I like songs that feel like conversations.  But what if they are conversations that are so intimate no one else should hear... well, those are my favorite songs.  I picked these 5 songs because to me they run the gamut of emotional conversations.  From "I don't ever want you back" to "God, please come back". My 6th full length studio album, 'Massachusetts' is out this month.

Katrina Stone: Only for the Brave

All the tips/donations from this album go to benefit The Alvarado Family in Fort Collins, Colorado as well as Brent's Place in Denver.

The Alvarados have a sweet 4 year old named Esther who is battling a type of cancer called Neuroblastoma. Her bravery and joy would put most anyone to shame and she is a tremendous inspiration. You can read about their journey at http://spendandbespent.blogspot.com/

Brent's Place is a facility in Denver that houses families and patients as they undergo life-saving treatment. This means they provide a home away from home capable of supporting entire families for as long as they need to be close to the hospital. Brent's Place is the ONLY "Safe-Clean" housing facility in the Rocky Mountain region approved by Children's Hospital Colorado for patients with compromised immune systems. There is never an out of pocket cost to the families who call Brent's Place home and the average cost to support the specialized housing is $93 a day. It is a truly wonderful place that fills a huge need in the community.

When you donate even $1, you are helping real people. You are contributing to something phenomenal. You are allowing these kiddos and their families to focus on getting better and being brave.

Schematic: The Fluorescent

what I say ABOUT them

This is a fun album. The music is catchy and the lyrics are fun. If you like Death Cab for Cutie, Weezer or Third Eye Blind you will like Schematic. :)

what they say ABOUT them

Having spent over a decade in the music industry performing with Alternative/Indie band, Mae, lead singer Dave Elkins has embarked on an entirely new artistic endeavor. Under the name Schematic, Elkins has already released a 5 song EP entitled “Fluorescent” and is set to release a full-length follow up album entitled “Color (n.) Inside the Lines” by the beginning of SXSW. Whilst retaining some of the sounds that Mae fans fell in love with, Dave has managed to develop an entirely new, undeniably unique sound. From the tasteful use of Chromatic guitar licks to the incorporation of pop-friendly odd time signature grooves, he has developed a style well-suited for a variety of listeners.

As if recording his own music has not been keeping Elkins busy enough, add to that equation his start-up of a new recording studio and record label in the heart of Nashville, his management of several new bands, and his plans to start an online artistic community (The Schematic Community) within the next year, and it becomes obvious that he is working harder than ever. And it's paying off.

Asker: The Escape Room

what do I say ABOUT them

They are considered Indie. I do like them. They are different. I don't understand the lyrics in some parts of the songs but they are catchy. "Cathedral" is a cool song. "All I can think about is going home and what can I hope for but going home. I found my way".

What do they say ABOUT them

In the two years that they've known each other, the three souls that make up Minneapolis indie-rock band Asker have learned a lot about balance. The balance of college, personal troubles, and budding musical hopes formed the sound of Asker's first effort, The Escape Room EP.

Recorded in Nashville at Schematic Studios in May of 2012, vocalist/guitarist Alexander Rollins, guitarist Jack Vondrachek, and drummer Alex Sullivan built a formula of expertly-crafted songs that reflect the juxtaposition of their youthful restlessness and a melodic wisdom beyond their years.

After a semester that led the band to a packed record release show, the CMJ Festival, college shows, and local club shows, the trio found themselves finding less and less balance and did what any suburban-bred college-students would do: trade textbooks and classrooms for the road and a van to bring their brand of melodic indie-rock across the United States. For now, they'll do what they do best: find balance in chaos and create from it.

Bracher Brown: Broken Glass & Railroad Tracks

What I say ABOUT him

I don't get it. The vocals are strained. He is labeled as Pop but I don't think this accurate. He is country through and through. Even the cover screams COUNTRY. He sounds like a pre-pubescent teen who is singing about stuff he doesn't understand. Maybe he will get better in time. Maybe he won't. But you tell me what you think.

what they say ABOUT him

Brown’s poignantly poetic lyrics on relationships, personal growth, and small town living belie his teenage years. His blend of roots rock with sophisticatedly accessible hooks, teardrop guitar solos, and elegantly subtle musicality is staggeringly developed and mature for any debut, let alone a debut from someone not old enough to buy a beer.

His sense of creative assuredness imbues Broken Glass and Railroad Tracks with congenial authenticity. The album was produced by acclaimed singer-songwriter Todd Carey in New York City. Brown wanted an organic production approach to the album, and Carey helped him achieve modern clarity with a vibrantly warm aesthetic.

A Rocket to the Moon: Ever Enough Video

What a beautiful song and video. If I could just have a little bit of love like that. :)

"I will always be yours forever and more
Through the push and the pull
I still drown in your love
And drink 'til I’m drunk
And all that I’ve done,
Is it ever enough"

Langhorne Slim & The Law: Summertime EP

What I say aBOUT them

This is a good EP. 5 Songs. The Way We Move, Bad Luck, Coffee Cups,  Summertime, The Way We Move - Solo Acoustic. I am not the biggest fan of this style of music but I do really like this band. Download and see what you think!

what they say ABOUT them

The 13 songs that compose Langhorne Slim & The Law’s most recent album, The Way We Move, are road-tested, rollicking and very rock ‘n’ rolling tunes that the songwriter perfected with his loyal band, and come out of the kind of good times and bad experiences that songwriters of Langhorne’s lofty stature can turn into life-affirming rock ‘n’ roll. You could also call what Langhorne Slim does folk music, but then there’s his sly, charming and open-hearted feel for pop music—those summertime melodies that nudge you into a grin even when the song is about something bad.

Langhorne has just returned from a sold out UK tour with The Lumineers, has a song airing regularly on broadcast TV as part of the Microsoft ad campaign for its new Windows 8 operating system, has a song in the opening credits of the new movie 21 and Over, and will kick off a seven-week-plus U.S. tour in March! Included in this sampler are three tracks from the new album, a previously unreleased acoustic version of the title track, and a song not on the album entitled Summertime.
For fans of The Avett Brothers, The Lumineers, Lucero, Justin Townes Earle and Dawes.

Alicia Keys: Brand New Me Music Video

I saw this for the first time tonight and loved it. The words really struck me.

Read these lyrics then listen to the song.

It's been a while, I'm not who I was before
You look surprised, your words don't burn me anymore
Been meaning to tell you, but I guess it's clear to see
Don't be mad, it's just the brand new kind of me
Can't be bad, I found a brand new kind of free

Careful with your ego, he's the one that we should blame
Had to grab my heart back
God knows something had to change
I thought that you'd be happy
I found the one thing I need, why you mad
It's just the brand new kind of me

It took a long long time to get here
It took a brave, brave girl to try
It took one too many excuses, one too many lies
Don't be surprised, don't be surprised

If I talk a little louder
If I speak up when you're wrong
If I walk a little taller
I've been under you too long
If you noticed that I'm different
Don't take it personally
Don't be mad, it's just the brand new kind of me
That ain't bad, I found a brand new kind of free

Oh, it took a long long road to get here
It took a brave brave girl to try
I've taken one too many excuses, one too many lies
Don't be surprised, oh see you look surprised

Hey, if you were a friend, you want to get know me again
If you were worth a while
You'd be happy to see me smile
I'm not expecting sorry
I'm too busy finding myself
I got this
I found me, I found me, yeah
I don't need your opinion
I'm not waiting for your ok
I'll never be perfect, but at least now i'm brave
Now, my heart is open
And I can finally breathe
Don't be mad, it's just the brand new kind of free
That ain't bad, I found a brand new kind of me
Don't be mad, it's a brand new time for me, yeah
